Panama City Renaissance School kids prepare gifts for the Women’s Shelter

Over the past several weeks, the PCRS Art and Community Service classes made beautiful gift boxes for the women living in the Women’s Shelter at the Panama City Mission. Many of these women are single mothers who have no other family and will likely go without gifts this holiday season. This past Thursday, students filled those boxes with gifts donated by the PCRS parents. The boxes were filled with slippers, gloves, socks, fingernail polish, lotion, perfume, lip gloss/ chap stick, makeup, jewelry, bath and toiletry items.  Ms. Estes took the boxes to the MIssion on Friday. Thanks to everyone who participated in this wonderful project.

Kids prepare dinner for the Panama City Rescue Mission

On Thursday, the Panama City Renaissance School prepared and donated 155 sack lunches to the Panama City Rescue Mission.  The Mission feeds more than 150 men, women and children each day. The PCRS parents donated all of the food, which included 20 loaves of bread, 10 large packs of sandwich meat, 200 apples and bananas, 200 bags of chips and other snacks, 10 large packs of cookies, and a box full of other food items.  Several of the moms and students made 155 sandwiches, and the students in the After School Enrichment Program packed all of the lunches.  The kids set up an assembly-line, where each child would take a bag and put an item from each of 5 boxes inside.  They finished packing the lunches in 45 minutes!  The students were amazed to learn that there are people in our community who do not have enough food to eat.  They were excited to be helping to feed hungry people and were so generous.  One student stated that he thought everyone in Panama City who has extra food should give to the Mission.

If you’ve never seen 155 sack lunches (I know I hadn’t), they filled up 8 large boxes!  The Mission residents and staff were so gracious and grateful.  I had so many people come by to thank the school and shake my hand.  It was a wonderful experience for all involved.  The Mission is looking forward to partnering with PCRS for another community service project in the future.

For the past several weeks students at the Panama City Renaissance School have been working on bowls for the Chautauqua Learn and Serve Charter School Empty Bowl project. During the first session the children made bowls. Then the bowls were fired. This past week the children painted the bowls. After the bowls are fired for the second time the bowls will go to Chautauqua Charter School for their annual fundraising event to support disabled people in the Panama City area. So not only did the kids have a wonderful time making pottery, but they also learned about the importance of giving back to their community. Great work kids!

On Saturday, the Panama City Renaissance School held a free community event to celebrate Presidents’ Day.  The event included a parade, flag and revolutionary war display, and craft projects for the kids. In addition, Darrell Hertz dressed as General George Washington and told the children about the founding of the country. Masks of the presidents and Abraham Lincoln finger puppets were big hits with the young children. A special thank you to all the PCRS volunteers who helped make the event a success.
